Sukma (Chhattisgarh) District Collector Alex Paul Menon abducted from a forested area at gun-point by Maoists or Naxals while he was interacting with tribal farmers about their problems. To rescue the 32-year-old Collector, Police officials posted in Sukma district searched certain parts of the forest area adjoining Andhra Pradesh. Different sources reporting that ‘the state government and the police department were eagerly waiting for a message or demands from the Maoists to release the young IAS officer.

On Saturday (21st April, 2012) evening around 20 naxalites / maoists clad in tribal dresses abducted the IAS officer in full public view in afternoon to the nearby forest. Also the Maoists/Naxals killed two guards of Alex Paul when they resisted the abduction. The spot was Majhipara village in Keralapal area of the naxal-infested district.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh and the opposition Congress party have appealed to the Maoists to release the District Collector immediately. Alex Paul Menon’s wife, Asha also made a fresh appeal on Sunday to the Maoists through local news channels to release her husband as he is suffering from asthma and not carrying medicines with him.

Alex Paul Menon appointed as the Magistrate-cum-Collector for the District of Sukma of Chhattisgarh state. Menon is a 32 years 2006 batch IAS officer. The incident happened when he went to the village on motorcycle was holding a meeting with the villagers as part of the government’s ‘Gram Suraj’ campaign, aimed at weaning away the locals from the path of Naxalism.

A police team led by district Superintendent of Police Abhishek Shandilya rushed to the spot and launched a combing operation to rescue the collector. In this matter Home Minister P Chidambaram assured of all help from the Centre. The state government has issued an alert in the areas adjoining Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, which share their border with Sukma district of the state.
