TRAI or Telecom Regulatory Authority of India is the prime regulator of the telecommunications business in India as part of Government. TRAI asked all telecom service providers to ensure that they offer their customers per second billing plan along with other offerings. This change of regulation made through TRAI by the 51st Amendment on Telecommunication Tariff Order (TTO) on 20th April, 2012 through a Press Notice. Some other changes came with this new TTO of TRAI, lets summarize it.
On Friday (20th April, 2012) TRAI mandated all mobile phone companies to offer ‘per second pulse rate’ tariff option to their customers. All operators must have at least one tariff plan that provides per second billing for both Prepaid and Postpaid customers.
A new limit created for the list of tariff plans offered by telecom companies i.e. every operator only offer up to 25 different tariff plans in total to their customers.
Ceiling on tariff / charges for calls and SMSs meant for participating in contests and games. The PRS or Premium Rate Services (calls and SMS made for participating in competition and voting) rates shall not exceed four times of the applicable local call/ SMS charges.
Giving flexibility to the service providers for implementing ILD tariff for Life time subscribers.
All these changes would work from its publication onwards i.e. 20th April, 2012 across the country. TRAI’s this order named as Telecommunication Tariff (Fifty First Amendment) Order, 2012.
